Professional photographers Katrina and Mark Kubicina began diversifying their business this past May when they opened an Airbnb in a renovated schoolhouse in Elyria, Ohio.
Dubbed “The Sweet Little Retreat,” the rental unit originally was renovated to attract wedding parties to the three-bedroom home in the quaint Midwestern town. But it’s proven to be a haven for a variety of vacationers to the Elyria area, and a top choice for lodging, considering it sleeps up to 12 guests in its neatly-decorated living spaces replete with spots for photo ops.
Katrina, who’s stayed at many Airbnbs, found she most appreciated special touches the owners provided, so she knew she wanted to make hers unique, too.
Snack Box Surprises
Not only is their Airbnb stocked with bottled water, coffee, oatmeal, and snacks, but each booking receives a special care package or snack box from The Care Crate Co. during their stay, as a surprise for them.
During the booking process, Katrina learns why her guests have chosen to stay there — and yes, it’s far more than weddings. She then selects a care package from The Care Crate Co. that best complements the purpose of the stay.
For example, Katrina recently hosted a family who was celebrating a college graduation at Oberlin. Due to COVID, not everyone could attend in person, so they streamed the ceremony on the television and enjoyed a Movie Night Snack Box while they watched their graduate cross the stage.
“We go above and beyond what a hotel would do,” Katrina said. “We always have [a care package] as a surprise for the guests because we want their experience to be wonderful and to spoil them.”
She admits she absolutely could provide treats via a quick visit to the grocery store, “but I’d much rather get it from a small business,” she said.
A Business Bonus
Is the business plan working? Katrina thinks so! Their unique Airbnb is booked nearly every weekend through October 2022, despite only opening on May 1 of this year.
The house is also the perfect location for the bridal party to get ready before weddings — which is convenient for Katrina and her husband’s wedding photography business.
“And the guests love the snack boxes!” Katrina added.
