Your Kids Are Off to College: Now What?
As a parent of college students it is exciting when your kids have started a new life on campus. Even though you’re extremely happy and proud of them, you can’t help thinking what your life will be like now that your children are ready to spread their wings. Before you let the empty nest syndrome in, find ways to fill the void that your kids’ absence will create.
Reinvent Your Relationship With Your Partner
How many times have you wished you could go on a road trip with your partner, dine at a fancy restaurant, or simply share some private moments without having to worry about the kids? As a parent, you’ve often had to sacrifice your own wants for your children’s sake. Now that the kids are on their way, it’s a great opportunity for you to rebuild your relationship and fulfill some of your lifelong desires.
Start a Hobby
If you’ve ever wanted to take up pottery classes, learn how to dance, or even try extreme sports, now is your chance. You’ll have lots of newfound free time on your hands so you might as well take advantage of it in a creative way. A new hobby will reinvigorate you and motivate you to pursue new goals. It’s also a great way to keep your mind busy so that you don’t mull over your kids’ absence.
Go Back to School
Maybe you had to drop out of school in order to start a family or you just couldn’t afford to go to college back then. Whatever the reason you gave up school is, you can always pick up where you left off. Adult education has become very popular, and the programs available range from basic education to vocational training and university degrees. Going back to school will not only help you acquire new skills and set new goals, but also meet people with common interests and aspirations.
Volunteer
If you miss taking care of your children, you can volunteer at a local children’s shelter, youth center, or church. Alternatively, you can offer your services at a community center. Being among kids is always exciting, and you will get to channel your love and energy into a noble cause. There are many underprivileged kids around you who can use all the care and support they can get.
Start a Business From Home
Now that the kids are off to college it’s time for you to get busy, especially if you have been a stay-at-home parent. There are many ways you can earn money, and they don’t necessarily involve setting up a brick-and-mortar business. You can create an online store to sell your own products or start a service business. These options are great because they require little startup capital and, if you market your services right, you can earn a steady income.
It’s always hard to see your kids move out for the first time, and you should give yourself ample time to adjust to this huge change. However, life doesn’t end when your kids grow up. See it as an opportunity to try new things and fulfill the dreams you had to give up for the sake of your children.
