Take Our Advice: Finals Study Tips to Share with Your Kid

Fuel Your Student’s Cram Sessions with a Care Package!

The spring semester has absolutely flown by! And while that means summer and the promise of a serious brain break are approaching, it also means finals week is just around the corner.

Help your student prepare by sharing these finals study tips. Drop them casually in a conversation, or send them a link! And then, send them a student care package to remind them that you love them, miss them, and want them to succeed.

Final Exam Study Tips for Students

  • Set yourself up for success by taking good notes in class and while you read your textbook. While we admit it might be a little late for this one, there’s still time to borrow notes from a classmate or go back through the textbook to pull out information that might’ve been missed during a first reading.

  • Study with classmates – even if it’s a virtual study session. You know that old adage, “Two heads are better than one”? It’s like that. Students can talk through concepts together, review study materials, or even peer review each others’ final essays.

  • Study a single topic for 30 minutes at a time to prevent learning fatigue. Learning fatigue is a real thing! It’s a result of being overwhelmed with too much material. Changing topics switches the gears in your brain and helps you remember more.

  • Create mnemonic devices to help you remember concepts. A mnemonic device is a technique that helps you remember information. Usually it’s in acronym form, like “Please excuse my dear Aunt Sally,” or PEMDAS, the mnemonic device for mathematical order of operations. If your student isn’t feeling very creative, a simple Internet search is likely to turn up a mnemonic device someone else made to remember the material.

  • Don’t wait until the last minute to hit the books. An all-nighter before the big test is a bad idea. Students should instead focus on being well-rested, well-nourished, and well-hydrated the night before. Start studying now – right now!

  • Plan study schedules in advance. Think about how the calendar in a smartphone is set up. It allows you to block off chunks of time per appointment. Using this feature is an ideal way to schedule out when to study which topics. A calendar is a helpful way to establish accountability.

  • Tune out. Wearing noise-canceling headphones or playing music helps avoid audible disruptions, like roommates moving around the room, people talking in the library (how rude!), or the family dog barking at a squirrel outside. Even an inexpensive set of disposable earplugs can help!

  • Practice self care. Students should be sure to take time out of their day to check in with themselves and make sure they have everything they need to sustain their life as a human being. They should do something relaxing and soothing every day, even if it’s breathing exercises, going for a walk, eating healthy meals, or playing a game of pick-up basketball with their suitemates.

Don’t Miss Our Self-Care Care Package, Coming in April

Speaking of self care, our April care package is all about it! It’s full of items to help students take a break, relax, and spend time with themselves.

April showers bring May flowers, but also relaxation. Stress relief eucalyptus-spearmint scented bath products are the highlight of April’s college subscription box. These two scents are proven to help relieve stress and promote relaxation.

A waterproof pouch keeps your student’s cell phone dry, no matter where they go to relax (maybe a bubble bath?). And healthy snacks fuel them up as they study.

Of course, there are a lot more wonderful items inside this awesome gift box; ask your student to show you what they got when they receive theirs in early April. Order it now, one box at a time, or sign up for our monthly subscription service to give your child something extra special to look forward to while they’re away from home.
